What is an Order Picker Forklift?

Order picker trucks are types of lift trucks that are controlled from a carriage wherein the operator stance can be found. Order picker trucks are like forklift trucks, but instead of forks, these trucks are fitted with a working platform wherein the operator can maneuver the machine. This type of trucks enables faster and more flexible selection of products that are placed on high-rise shelves.

Variations of order picker trucks are available and are in accordance with the application these will be used. There are other models that have an auxiliary mast that is mounted in front of the platform with pallet forks. This enables a controlled lifting and elevating of the pallet. On the other hand, there are order picker trucks that have forks that are fixed in front of the platform and thus cannot be moved. Another variant is a wheeled cart that is attached in front of the platform.

Order pickers are different from the standard forklifts in a lot of aspects. Order pickers have a different steering control and they can turn sharper than a usual forklift. They are not made to enter trucks nor drive on rough surfaces. Most models of order pickers are electric powered and its battery is used as part of the counterbalance. They also have a guide wire that helps them continue operating in a straight path.

Options and accessories available for this type of forklifts include a rail guidance, load-facing operator controls, a retractable tether, and an auto-locking pallet clamp. Availing rail guidance enables automatic steering control. This is advantageous especially for very narrow aisle widths. Additionally, rail guidance would not be affected if ever a power outage in the warehouse occurs. A wire guidance can be also be used instead of a rail guidance. Wire guidance is beneficial on uneven surfaces since it provides additional floor clearance without guide rollers. There would also be no mechanical stress on the truck or on floor structures, unlike rails. The retractable tether helps increase the efficiency of the operator by reducing the number of slack in the tether. Load-facing operator controls also improve the efficiency of the operator. It enables him to see and reach the controls easily.

It is important to be aware of the potential hazards of order picker trucks. Hazards include the instability of the lift especially when it is at an elevated position and the lift if pulling heavy objects from shelves. If the loads are too much for the load capacity of the truck, this can cause the lift to tip over. To avoid accidents, the operator should always remember to stack the loads evenly across the pallet and that they are balanced.

Having order picker trucks will benefit for warehouses with narrow aisles and high racking. Although these conditions reduce storage costs, what would be needed are strength and flexibility for the machine that would operate in these places. The order picker trucks are specially designed for these environments so that it would be easier for the operator and the manufacturers in general.

Order Picker Safety Guidelines – An order picker is an electric lift truck used to pick items from racks in industrial warehouses. It has a platform that can be moved up and down, which allows the operator to pull things from shelves while standing on the platform, without having to get in and out of the equipment every time.

Serious Capabilities

An order picker can be low-level, medium-level, or high-level, depending on its load capacity (the amount of load it can withstand) and lift height (the highest level the platform can be raised to). A typical high-level order picker has a load capacity of up to 3,000 pounds, and the platform can be lifted to a height of up to 40 feet.

No Amateurs

Like any industrial equipment, the order picker too needs to be handled with care and should only be operated by trained personnel. In addition to that, OSHA guidelines for employees who work at elevated heights also need to be followed to minimize the risk of accidents.

Given below is a list of OSHA approved safety procedures that need to be followed while operating an order picker.

  • You should not operate the order picker if the platform is elevated to a height of 152 inches (roughly 12 feet) and above. You should lower the platform, drive the truck to the next location, and then raise the platform again. The rule, however, only applies to free-roaming trucks. Wire or rail guided trucks can be operated even if the platform is elevated to a height of 152 inches and above.
  • The operator’s platform should be at least 20 inches wide. Its surface should be non-slippery. It should have an overhead guard as well as side guards for the protection of the operator.
  • You should wear a safety harness while operating the equipment.
  • You should always honk while turning a corner and while approaching an intersection.
  • You should make sure the load does not exceed the maximum permitted load capacity of the truck.
  • You should always drive the truck at a safe speed and avoid sudden changes in direction, as it can affect the stability of the equipment and cause it to overturn.
  • You should maintain a safe distance from other vehicles operating in the area as well as workers at the ground level, particularly if your platform is elevated.
  • It is a wise idea to post signs or erect barriers to prevent people from accidentally walking into your area of operation. If multiple vehicles are operating in the same area, a flag person can be posted at the site to control the flow of traffic.
  • Finally, you should always be alert and cognizant of your environment – if you are lost in thought even for a moment, you risk not only injuring yourself but also those who are nearby.

Intolerable Order Picker Safety Guidelines

Order Picker Forklift

Accidents involving order pickers can be minimized to a remarkable extent or avoided altogether by following the OSHA guidelines listed above. No one is perfect but what bothers a lot of people is carelessness and when someone is injured or even killed because of basic neglect that is when the hammer needs to come down.

Attention to Detail

The equipment should be operated, cleaned, repaired, and maintained only by trained personnel. It should also be inspected on a regular basis to make sure all the essential parts are in perfect working condition.
