Mission Statement

The National Construction Training Centre at Mount Lucas is dedicated to train, develop and upskill the competencies for both Construction machine operators and construction operatives that will enable trainees to develop a career within the Construction Industry. This is achieved through a positive working relationship between the Instructor and the trainee in a fully simulated working environment on site at Mount Lucas.

Our Training Program

Our Forklift Operator Safety Awareness, Working at Heights and Mobile Elevated Work Platform training courses are facilitated by certified trainers. You wouldn't want your kids learning the rules of the road or how to drive a car from a YouTube video. Our instructors strive to make each course an interactive experience for both new and experienced operators, drawing from experience to encourage open discussion and engagement while meeting the requirements set out in both the CSA Standard B335-15, AMSE/ANSI Standard B56.1, Ontario Regulation 213/91 and other industrial standards.

Featured Courses

In addition to our well-established operator training courses, Lucas Liftruck Services is proud to introduce an expanded training offering with new courses emphasizing elevated work environments in cooperation with 1 Contact Safety. The Working at Heights (full) and Working at Heights (renewal) courses will be offered at your location. These courses are intended for those required by Ontario regulations to receive specialized training to deal with the hazards and issues associated with working at elevated heights. How It Works

Lucas

The objective of our forklift operator, working at heights and mobile elevated platform training courses are to ensure that trainees understand the principles involved in the safe operation of a forklift, harness or mobile elevated platform, know their legal obligations, can recognize the potential hazards and are prepared to complete any addition training required by law in Ontario.

More on Forklift Operator Training

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (also known as OHSA), only a 'competent' individual with a valid forklift operator's license may legally operate a forklift in Canada. But what, exactly, does that mean? How do you become a licensed, competent operator? Like other industrial equipment, forklifts and lift trucks require professional operator training to use in a safe manner. Given their size, power, and weight, it is essential that lift trucks are treated with respect by the operator, and all others coming in close proximity. If driven by an untrained operator or in an unsafe manner, a lift truck has the potential to cause extensive damage to other equipment, products, shelving, racking, and buildings while also placing other employees at risk of serious injury or death.

In light of the risks and hazards associated with operating a forklift or lift truck, the Ministry of Labour recently implemented more stringent regulations and safety requirements regarding forklift operator training and operations - causing many companies to institute proper safety programs and provide appropriate training for their forklift operators. At Lucas, our operator training courses cover the theoretical portion of the certification process.

According to OHSA/CSA standard B335-15, all operators must pass a knowledge verification quiz after reviewing the following safety material:

All Forklift Training Requirements under Current Legislation - OHSA/CSA Standard B335-04
Principles of Counter-Balanced Lift Truck Operation
Identifying Vehicle and Operator Hazards in the Workplace
Lift Truck Stability and the Stability Triangle
Safe Operation and Tip-Over Procedures
Battery and Propane Hazards and Procedures
Ministry Of Labor Guidelines Overview
Knowledge Verification Quiz

Everyone that achieves a passing grade in the knowledge verification quiz receives a certification card (often referred to as a 'forklift license'). With this in hand, operators may proceed to the practical component of the operator training process where they will acquire the practical skills and experience necessary to qualify as a competent operator. Here, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that each operator is trained to operate the lift truck(s) they will encounter on a day-to-day basis by an industry expert.
