I'm trying to update from Thunderbird 1.5.0.12 to 2.0.0.9.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. 12, 2006 – Mozilla Corp. Today announced the launch of Thunderbird 1.5, the latest version of its full-featured email client, available now as a free download at www.getthunderbird.com. Renowned for its intelligent spam filters and customizable views, Thunderbird has attracted more than 18 million downloads since its launch in December 2004. Thunderbird is a free mail client for Mac, Windows, and Linux. These instructions will show you how to connect to Thunderbird via POP and backup your mail locally (on your computer). Step 1: Enable POP in Your Gmail Settings Follow Google's instructions to enable POP in your Gmail settings.

The first thing I thought of was to simply click Help -> Check fo Updates, but this is greyed out.

YearI then went to http://getthunderbird.com and downloaded the file thunderbird-2.0.0.9.tar.gz, extracted it and ran ./thunderbird script from the thunderbird directory as root. This returns the error:
./thunderbird-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I resolved this by installing as follows: yum install compat-libstdc++-33

I then renamed the existing thunderbird script file in /usr/bin to thunderbird-1.5.0.12 and copied the script from the new thunderbird install into /usr/bin as thunderbird-2.0.0.9. I had to edit it to make sure that the MOZ_LIB variable pointed to /usr/lib not /usr/local/lib as it has as default and then linked it to thunderbird so the menu items for it would work.

This seems to have worked, but it was a lot of effort for something that should have been easy and I'm sure I've blundered around unecessarily. Any information on how I could have better achieved this is very welcome!
